Mountain Works Sustainable Living

Horse Powered and Naturally Grown

Holding with the theories of Permaculture and animal powered organic agriculture practices predicated by the Small Farmer's Journal, Mountain Works Farms is currently housed at Appalachian State University's Sustainable Development Farm and the adjoining Episcopal Conference Center in Valle Crucis, NC as well as our recently leased small holding on the corner of Idlewild Rd. and US-221 in Fleetwood, NC. This Spring we took on a small garden plot just down the road from the house we are care-taking in the Aho community and this Fall we have begun managing a 60 acre farm in Tood, NC for forage and forest products.

Horse-drawn mowing, plowing, harrowing, etc. are available for landowners seeking an alternative to highly mechanized, petro-fuel dependent forms of farming. Human powered farm labor is also available from Mountain Works Farms at a reasonable rate. Since we currently run a network of mini farms we increasingly have the ability to produce value-added farm goods such as draft horses, mixed produce, cider, jam, canned goods, meat, and hay. The newest buzz is on growing sorghum cane for molasses next year and possibly a CSA. Stay tuned for more.
